closing time: how i walked in on the end of the world
a few years ago, i saw an ad in pc gamer for an MMO called dungeon fighter online. while the concept (arcade style action gameplay mixed with MMO elements) intrigued me, my computer at the time could not run it. today i finally remembered it, and went to download it on steam. after getting through the tutorial area and enjoying myself immensely, i started to notice people making references to things like "signing off for the last time" and "D-day". i realized that some kind of shutdown was going to occur. i looked at various newsposts and read that the plug was going to be pulled at midnight. that was when it hit me: i had walked in on the end of the world. i returned to the game and watched as people said their goodbyes and killed their last boss monsters. the attitude was, as was to be expected in the last hours of a game, fairly quiet and somber. dungeon fighter was a great game. i just wish i had gotten to spend more time with it.
